One Response to “ Junior Architect Resume ”

  1. As a registered architect I offer the following comments related to the above resume sample. I wouldn’t hire this individual based on that resume if the last line stated they would pay me to work at my office.

First individuals that are not licensed should be careful about describing themselves with the term “architect” no matter if it is preceded by “Jr.” or “intern” as many within the profession take exceptional offense to this. I don’t take offence to these titles only when used within a resume as the profession offers little in the way of appropriate alternate title that effectively distinguishes individuals who are dedicated to professional development within the field from those who are simply technical draftsman with no reasonable aspiration of becoming registered architects.

The sentence structure is sometimes poor, example: “Seeking for the position of…..” that is awful especially seen straight away in the objective section. The individual seems to have poor grasp of the language as evidenced by their inconsistent ability to conjugate verbs, use plurals, provide commas within lists, and place punctuation at the end of bullet points. Architecture is a field that fully focused on communication in all its forms, spoken, delineated, physical, and certainly written. An inability to effectively communicate in the written word alone would be seriously detrimental, though it alludes to possible lack of spoken communication as well. These are both very serious shortcomings.

Intern architects should place their education at or near the top of a resume as, like it or not, with little in the way of practical work experience within the field the reputation of your college’s design program will do a lot of positive speaking for you. A more major concern would be the statement “Bachelor degree in Architecture or Interior Design” which is confusing as it does not inform the reader as to which degree was achieved or if indeed both were. Capitilazation of “Degree” in that sentence would be required as well. If one has achieved a degree in architecture it should be noted if the degree was NAAB accredited, stating 5yr. NAAB accd. Degree works nicely and is a testimant to your dedication to professional development. For those who are still in school and looking for work indicate your dates of attendance, Fall 00’ – Present, for example and include the number of credits achieved thus far, your anticipated graduation date, and completed courses of note.

Much of the above information is paraphrased from memory of a book entitled “A Writer’s Reference” by, I believe, Diane Hacker which is an invaluable reference recourse for all types of writing including resumes and business correspondence and one which I highly recommend everyone own a copy of.
